When you're thinking about buying a new bed, there a few important things to consider. From floor space to sleeping style. Should you pick a standard double or a small double? Is a single too small, or a super king too big? Thankfully we at comfybedss have put together a fool-proof guide to make sure your one step closer to finding your perfect size bed.

What are the standard bed sizes?

There are up to ten bed sizes across different suppliers! Yes it can be a stressful task for you. However we at comfybedss offer six classic bed sizes which adhere to UK standard bed sizes: Small Single, Single, Small Double, Double, King and Super King.

Most modern beds/mattresses sold in UK & Ireland are constructed using their imperial dimension but are generally sold in their approximate metric equivalent:

Bed/Mattress Size  Dimensions (Imperial) Dimensions (Metric)
Small Single / Bunk  2’6” x 6’3” 75 x 190 cm
Single  3’0” x 6’3” 90 x 190 cm
Small Double / 4FT 4’0” x 6’3” 120 x 190 cm
Double  4’6” x 6’3” 135 x 190 cm
King  5’0” x 6’6” 150 x 200 cm
Super King  6’0” x 6’6” 180 x 200 cm

Small Single (2'6") Bunk

Ideal for younger children or the petite. Small single/ bunk mattresses work well in smaller bedrooms where space is at a premium. They are great for acting as a transitioning bed for young children moving from a cot into their first bed.

Single (3'0")

Suitable for both children and adults. They are great for when guests come over and provide a good amount of sleeping space for a single sleeper with half the width of a super king bed. This is the most common size for children's beds and bunk beds. Single beds can account for any growth spurts, from toddlers right through to the mid teenage years.

Small Double (4'0")

A 'small double' (4ft) bed (also known as a Queen or Three Quarter) is wider than a single but smaller in width than a double. It provides a wealth of space for one or enough room for two. Great for smaller bedrooms and guestrooms where a standard double won't fit. Where space is at a premium, you can buy an ottoman base or a divan base with drawers to help maximize storage.

Standard Double (4'6")

This is the most common and widely available size here in the UK. Designed to comfortably sleep 2 adults with enough room to move. Ideal for average sized rooms as well as large rooms.

King Size (5'0")

A standard 'King Size' (5'0") bed consists of having a longer length than a standard double bed (6'6" instead of 6'3"). A King size bed will provide plenty of room for two adult sleepers, great for adults that are taller than your average and also great for large bedrooms.

Super King (6'0")

The super king (6'0") sized bed provides an abundance of space for two sleeping adults with a whooping width of 180cm and a length of 200cm. Perfect for couples who prefer their own space. It's mighty width makes it possible for a great family lie in on a sunday morning.

What depth of mattress will you need?

Most of the mattresses sold here at comfybedss vary from 20-30cm thick, so bear in mind your needs for height and back support too. Be sure to pick a mattress that is suitable to your bed base. We have mattresses that provide soft comfort support all the way to extra firm support which can be viewed here on our mattress collection page.

Now you should feel more prepared pick the perfect bed for you.
