Bed and Mattress Sizes Guide UK

First of all, know that mattresses and bed sizes are different: mattresses don’t have a headboard or legs so their dimensions are smaller. Measure your space for bed frames not just a mattress.

Also, some UK retailers sell mattresses in EU sizes which are different: EU sizes are often wider or longer than UK mattresses so you’ll need to choose one or the other. We only sell UK sizes.

The most popular UK bed and mattress sizes are single, double and king but other sizes detailed below are also available.

What is a small single bed and mattress?

A small single mattress is 75cm wide by 190cm long, 15cm narrower than a standard single but the same length.

Small single divan bases match the mattress dimensions, the mattress fits snugly. But if you choose a standard bed, bear in mind the frame will add 10-20cm to the overall width due to its design.

Who should get a small single?

Small single beds are ideal for:

  • Compact spaces like box rooms

  • Guest rooms that are used infrequently

  • Children’s bedrooms, up to 8 years old

  • Twin rooms where two standard singles won’t fit, as a small single bed can be placed side by side to create king size bed dimensions when pushed together.

What is a single bed and mattress?

A single mattress is 90cm wide and 190cm long, the same length as a small single but 15cm wider than a small single, enough to stretch out a bit more.

As with small singles, single divan bases match the mattress dimensions to save floor space. If you add a headboard it will add 10cm to the length, or choose a frame which will add 10-20cm to the overall dimensions.

Who should buy single beds?

  • Older couples who like to sleep separately.

  • Standard twin rooms, like those found in hotels and B&Bs.

  • Children’s bedrooms, especially with bunk beds or high sleepers for older children.

Overall single beds are the most popular of the smaller standard bed sizes and small singles cater to very specific needs in very compact spaces (or for smaller people).

What is a small double (Queen) bed and mattress?

A small double mattress, also known as a queen and three quarter, is 120cm wide and 190cm long, 30cm wider than standard single beds. This extra width gives much more room to stretch out, like a larger person lying on their side.

Small double beds are popular with teenagers and work well in smaller bedrooms where a full double would feel too large. They are suitable for one person or couples and can also be found in styles that maximize storage space.

Small double divan bases match the mattress dimensions for a snug fit, but standard bed frames will add 10-20cm to the width beyond the mattress size.

Who should get a small double bed and mattress?

A Small double bed will work well in:

  • Teenagers’ bedrooms

  • Double bedrooms with limited space

  • Guest rooms, for couples staying overnight or two nights

Small double beds don’t have the full width of a standard double but still have plenty of room to relax and sleep. Small double ottoman beds are also great for maximising storage in compact bedrooms.

What is a double bed and mattress?

A double mattress is 135cm wide and 190cm long, 15cm wider than a small double. This is our most popular size as it balances plenty of sleeping space with floor space in smaller bedrooms.

The extra width over a small double is perfect for couples and individuals who want more room so a double bed and mattress is the go-to choice for most standard bedrooms.

Who should get a double?

Double beds work well for:

  • Standard double bedrooms

  • Couples or those with regular sleeping partners

  • Guest rooms for medium to long term stays

What is a king size bed and mattress?

A king size mattress is 150cm wide and 200cm long, 15cm wider and 10cm longer than a standard double.

Those who are used to a double bed find king size beds much more comfortable. Another advantage is that king size divan bases are often the same width and length as a standard double bed frame so you can fit king size beds in a double sized room.

Who should get a UK king size bed?

King size beds are for:

  • Couples

  • Families with young children sharing the bed

  • Individuals who are easily disturbed by a partner’s movements

  • Tall individuals

  • Large bedrooms

What is a super king size bed and mattress?

A super king size mattress is 180cm wide and 200cm long, the largest standard bed size. It has 30cm more width than a king size bed and the same length so perfect for maximum comfort and room to spread out.

Who should get a super-king bed?

Super-king beds are massive so work well in:

  • Luxury homes for ultimate comfort

  • Open-plan rooms with plenty of space

  • Large master bedrooms, at least 250cm wide

What is a zip and link bed and mattress?

Zip and link beds join two small single or single mattresses to make one large bed, either a king or super-king size.

Two small singles equals a king and two singles equals a super-king so you can create a sleeping space for couples or individuals.

Most zip and link beds have a large, heavy duty zipper that runs along the edges of the mattresses. By unzipping this you can join the two mattresses together tightly. Some also have rigid metal link bars along the zipper edge.

Who should get a zip and link bed?

A zip and link bed is two mattresses—small singles or singles—that can be joined to make a larger sleeping surface, a king or super-king size bed.

When two small singles are joined they make a king size bed and two singles make a super-king. This gives you flexibility to accommodate couples or separate sleepers as needed.

Most zip and link beds have a sturdy zipper along the mattress edges to join them together and some models have rigid metal link bars along the zipper edge for extra stability.

Bed Frames Size Considerations

When choosing a bed, it’s essential to consider the size of the mattress it will hold. A base that is too small for the mattress can lead to a poor fit, while onethat is too large can leave too much space between the mattress and the frame. To ensure a proper fit, measure the mattress and the bed frame carefully before making a purchase.

Consider the following factors when choosing from different beds:

  • Mattress size: Make sure the bed is designed to accommodate the size of the mattress. For example, a king size bed frame should be able to hold a king size mattress. This ensures that your bed and mattress fit perfectly together, providing optimal comfort and support.

  • Bed frame style: Different bed frame styles have varying dimensions. For example, a platform frame may have a smaller footprint than a traditional frame with a headboard and footboard. This can affect the overall size and fit of the bed in your bedroom.

  • Bedroom space: Consider the size of the bedroom and the space available for the bed. A larger frame may not fit in a smaller bedroom, while a smaller bed frame may get lost in a larger room. It’s important to balance the bed size with the available bedroom space to create a harmonious and functional layout.

By taking these factors into account, you can choose a bed frame that not only fits your mattress perfectly but also complements your bedroom floor space.

Room Layout for Optimal Mattress Fit

The layout of the bedroom can greatly impact the fit of the mattress. To ensure an optimal fit, consider the following factors:

  • Room dimensions: Measure the length and width of the bedroom to determine the maximum size of the bed that can fit comfortably. This helps in selecting the right bed size, whether it’s a single bed, double bed, or even a super king size bed.

  • Doorway and hallway clearance: Make sure the bed can be easily moved through doorways and hallways without damaging the walls or the bed. This is especially important for larger bed sizes like king size beds and super king size beds.

  • Window placement: Consider the placement of windows in the bedroom and how they may impact the placement of the bed. For instance, placing the bed under a window might affect natural light and ventilation.

  • Furniture arrangement: Arrange furniture in a way that creates a comfortable and functional space. For example, place a dresser or nightstand on either side of the bed to create a sense of balance. This not only enhances the room’s aesthetics but also ensures that the bed and mattress fit well within the overall layout.

By considering these factors, you can create a bedroom layout that optimizes the fit of the mattress and creates a comfortable and functional space. This thoughtful approach ensures that your bed and mattress not only fit well but also enhance the overall bedroom experience.

What size bed and mattress should I buy?
  • For couples: A double usually works but a king size is recommended for couples with young children or if one partner is a light sleeper. King size is particularly good for mixed weight couples who feel each other’s movements.

  • For children: A single is ideal for children aged 5+ but a small single can be suitable up to around 8.

  • For elderly: Small singles can be an option but a standard single is often better for extra space and comfort.

How to make sure your mattress fits your bed

To make sure your mattress fits your bed simply pair a UK size mattress with a UK size bed.

Mattress depth also needs to be considered as this can affect headboard space for sitting up and bunk bed safety rails.
